Concord blocked a Bradley Pinion field goal attempt in the final minutes to beat Northwest Cabarrus 24-23 Friday night.

Things started a little rocky for the Spiders. Trojan defensive back E.J. Rhinehart stepped in front of a B.J. Beecher pass and returned it for a touchdown to put the Trojans up 7-0 late in the 1st quarter.

The Spiders tied the score early in the 2nd quarter as Beecher hit a streaking Zosh Heilig for a 63 yard touchdown.

On the ensuing drive the Trojans took a 10-7 lead on Pinion's 40 yard field goal.

Beecher put the Spiders in front again with another strike to Heilig, this time torching the Trojans for 47 yards.

John Edmond gave the Trojans the lead again with an electric 55 yard punt return touchdown shortly before halftime.

With less than a minute remaining in the first half Beecher drove the Spiders into field goal position. Junior kicker Robert Salsich connected on a 35 yard field goal to tie the game at 17-17 going into halftime.

The defenses and miscues by both teams controlled the 3rd quarter.

However early in the 4th quarter the Trojans put together the go-ahead drive. Northwest scored when receiver Will England scooped up a fumble and fell into the endzone after a long run by the Trojans. Pinion's point after attempt was no good.

Concord would have to drive 80 yards to retake the lead after a booming Pinion kickoff. The drive started with a nifty run from Denzel Phillips. Beecher also completed passes to tight end Terrance Knox and receiver Alex Asbury on the drive. Beecher tied the game with a 16 yard touchdown pass to Bravone Howard. Robert Salsich's extra point put the Spiders up 24-23.

The teams exchanged punts before Northwest made a final charge. Colby Williford completed a huge 3rd down pass to Rhinehart to get the Trojans into scoring position.

The Trojans appeared to put the game away with a touchdown run but the play was called back for an illegal shift.

The Spider defense held for three straight plays and used all three time outs to setup a field goal attempt with 58 seconds remaining. Pinion's kick was blocked by sophomore linebacker Jerry Burk preserving a 24-23 win for Concord. It capped off a monster night for Burk, who added 10 tackles.

Denzel Phillips led the Concord rushing attack with 136 yards on 28 carries.

After the early interception Beecher settled in and finished 16-23 for 253 and 3 touchdowns. Zosh Heilig led the receiving corps with 4 catches for 125 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Burk led all defenders with 10 tackles and the key blocked kick. Hunter White also added a key 3rd down sack.
