Page 1 of 2 Playing in the friendly confines of Robert C. Bailey Stadium was just what the doctor ordered for the Spiders who defeated East Rowan 33-6 Friday night.
Both teams struggled to get any offense going early, exchanging punts for most of the 1st quarter. The Spiders struck first with a 34 yard touchdown pass to tight end Terrance Knox, who made a leaping catch and rumbled into the endzone untouched. East Rowan got on the board with a Max Allen 32 yard touchdown run after a bad punt snap setup the Mustangs in Concord territory. Concord grabbed the momentum right back when Jamil Bost took the ensuing kickoff back deep into Mustang territory. Denzel Phillips scored from 1 yard out to give the Spiders a 14-6 lead going into the half. Concord's offense wasted little time in the second half scoring on their first possession of the half. Phillips scored on a 4 yard scamper to put Concord up 20-6. The Spider defense got in on the scoring when Jalen Brown picked off a Mustang pass and returned it 42 yards for a touchdown. East would not threaten in the 3rd quarter. The Spiders added one more score as B.J. Beecher found a wide open Terrance Highsmith for a 20 yard touchdown early in the 4th. The Mustangs had one final chance but a 39 yard field goal sailed wide left as time expired. B.J. Beecher finished 13-23 for 157 yards and 2 touchdowns. Denzel Phillips rushed for 2 touchdowns and 103 yards on 17 carries. Terrance Highsmith and Terrance Knox each added touchdown receptions. The Spider defense turned in a dominant effort. Jalen Brown and Colby Mason each picked off a pass. Ben Kelnhoffer added a sack. Concord will host Hunter Huss next Friday. Stats courtesy Scott Dyer and Billy Lyerly.
