Asbury-Monroe

Concord staged a furious 4th quarter comeback to beat Monroe 45-41 Friday night.

The game resembled a heavyweight fight. In the first half the offenses slugged the defenses.

Monroe scored on the first play after the storm delay. Concord answered with a long drive capped off by a short Denzel Phillips touchdown.

The two offenses continued to decimate the other team's defense.

Monroe took the lead, Concord tied it up with a short B.J. Beecher keeper.

Monroe scored again, then Concord tied the game with a 42 yard Beecher to Alex Asbury touchdown pass.

Toward the end of the 2nd quarter the Spider defense came up with a much needed stop. After a shanked Redhawk punt the Spiders set up shop at the Monroe 24 yard line. The drive would stall but Robert Salsich would connect on a 35 yard field goal to give Concord a 24-21 halftime lead.

In the 3rd quarter Monroe took control of the game.

Quarterback Quayshawn Chambers put the Redhawks in the lead with a 7 yard touchdown run. Later in the 3rd Redhawk corner Tre Shun Wynn stepped in front of a Beecher pass and returned it 25 yards for a touchdown. Monroe dialed up the pressure on Beecher in the 3rd quarter, resulting in 3 interceptions. After the 3rd interception Monroe pulled out to a 41-24 lead, on a busted play Chambers scambled 65 yards for the score.

Down 41-24 going into the 4th quarter the Spiders chances of moving to 3-0 seemed unlikely. However the Redhawks only dressed 26 players for the game, many of them playing on offense, defense and special teams. The Spider's depth along with a few timely calls by the Spider coaching staff came into play in the 4th quarter.

Beecher shook off the earlier interceptions and along with his defensive teammates rallied the Spiders.

The rally started with the first drive in the 4th quarter. A screen pass to Phillips put the Spiders in scoring position. Beecher found tight end Parker Swaringen on a 5 yard touchdown pass.

The Redhawks advanced into Spider territory but the defense held on a 4th down run. The ensuing drive started at the Concord 35 yard line. Beecher connected with Asbury again, this time covering 17 yards. The drive was kept alive by a key 4th down conversion pass from Beecher to Zosh Heilig. The Spiders had closed to 41-38.

After allowing Monroe to run the ball early on the Spider defense again buckled down, holding the Redhawks to 3 rushes and a punt.

After a few plays the Spiders were in scoring position but facing a critical 4th down. Beecher found Asbury once again, connecting on a 20 yard touchdown pass to give the Spiders a 45-41 lead with 2:31 left in the game.

Monroe had one more shot, but the Spiders held forcing Monroe to go for the 4th down conversion. Chambers pass intended for Wynn fell incomplete. Concord was able to run the remaining time off the clock.

After gaining over 400 yards Monroe went without a first down on their final 12 offensive plays.

B.J. Beecher finished 15-30 for 280 yards with 4 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. He completed passes to 8 different receivers. Denzel Phillips led the Concord ground attack with 60 yards on 15 carries. Alex Asbury had a monster night, hauling in 5 catches for 122 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Spider defense made some key stops when it mattered.

After a lengthy weather delay play resumed around 10PM.
