Page 1 of 3 Concord beat Rockingham County 30-8 Friday at Robert C Bailey Stadium. Like their first round game Concord jumped out to a big 1st half lead behind an efficient offense and dominating defense. The Spider defense forced a turnover on the Cougar's 2nd play from scrimmage. After a short gain Khalif Galloway fumbled and Rocky Reid recovered near midfield. Concord took over and scored a few plays later when Xavier Bell found Terrance Knox for a 1 yard touchdown pass. On the next drive Spider defender Kendall Bost intercepted a Cougar pass and returned it to the 15 yard line before being stripped from behind. The Cougars recovered deep in their own territory but were forced to punt. Denzel Phillips broke loose for a 15 yard touchdown run on the ensuing Concord drive. Xavier Bell's 2 point conversion run put the Spiders up 15-0. The Spider defense produced a turnover and two 3-and-out possessions in the first quarter. After another Cougar 3-and-out Phillips struck again with a 66 yard touchdown run to put Concord up 21-0 early in the 2nd quarter. Concord carried a 21-0 lead into the half. Concord took the 2nd half kickoff and again moved into Cougar territory but this time the Cougar defense stopped a 4th down run to take over near their own 10. Two plays later Cougar quarterback Jordan Keen bobbled a shotgun snap and back peddled into the endzone to retrieve it but was ruled down in the endzone for a Spider safety. After the free kick the Spiders started their drive at the Cougar 45. After a long pass to Bravone Howard put the Spiders in the red zone Phillips broke loose for his 3rd touchdown, this time from 16 yards out. Concord was up 30-0 going to the 4th quarter. The Cougars did get on the board with a long pass off of a lateral. The two point conversion made it 30-8. The Spider defense held the Cougars in check yielding only 51 yards rushing and 118 yards passing. Desmond Shamsid-Dean led the Spiders with 8 tackles. Hunter White recovered two fumbles, Logan Sedergren also recovered a fumble. Denzel Phillips led the Spiders offense with 23 carries for 134 yards and 3 touchdowns. B.J.
