Big plays propel Spiders past Trojans Dale Barbee photo

Concord defeated Northwest Cabarrus 35-7 Friday night at Trojan Stadium.

The only thing standing between Concord and a shot at a fourth straight SPC title was Northwest. However the host Trojans were not quick to concede to the favored Spiders.

Northwest controlled much of the first quarter with a punishing ground game led by tailback George Miller-Duncan.

The Trojans received the opening kickoff and were driving when Spider cornerback Jourdan Heilig picked off a pass to stop the drive.

The Spider offense was unable to move the chains, the Trojans picked up where they left off. Miller-Duncan and Trojan quarterback Sam Walker provided the ground game. Walker converted a key 4th down pass to Ben Coates to keep the drive alive. Fullback San Newhouse put the Trojans ahead 7-0 with 1:35 left in the first quarter.

The Spider offense responded with a 63 yard drive, capped off with a Jacob Irby 7 yard pass to Hamsah Nasirildeen with 11:30 remaining in the second quarter. Landon Trott made the first of his 5 extra points on the night.

After a quick Trojan three and out the Spiders were on the move again. After 10 plays and 55 yards the Spiders were up 14-7 after a Malik Brown 5 yard run.

Just before halftime Irby found tight end Isaac Staton who scampered 46 yards to put the Spiders up 21-7 with 46 seconds left in the half.

Justin Nicholson took the second half kickoff and returned it deep into Trojan territory. P.J. Hall scored on 4th and goal from the 1yard line to give the Spiders a 28-7 cushion.

The Trojans threatened on the next drive but the Spiders picked off a Walker pass(defender #) in the endzone.

On the ensuing play tailback Jay Wilkerson broke loose for a 95 yard touchdown run. Tying the school record for longest touchdown run.

Northwest threatened to score midway through the 4th. Hamsah Nasirildeen picked off a pass near the Spider goalline and covered both sides of the field on a spectacular run before being brought down at the Trojans 12.

Nasirildeen had a monsterous night for the Spiders; he led the defense with 11 tackles, picked off two passes and caught a touchdown pass.

Next week Concord travels to Robinson. With a win the Spiders clinch a share of their 4th SPC title in as many years. Robinson can clinch a co-championship with a win.
