Both Concord and J.M. Robinson entered Friday night's contest looking for their first win of the season. The Bulldogs were not the only visitors at Robert C. Bailey Stadium Friday night. The remnants of tropical storm Hannah brushed the area providing some heavy rain showers in the first half.
In the 1st quarter the teams exchanged several punts until Robinson tailback Jason Hampton broke free for a 37 yard touchdown run to put the Bulldogs up 7-0. The defenses ruled the rest of the quarter. Concord's Darin Posey and Wesley Scott sacked Bulldog quarterback Robert Cloninger to end the 1st quarter. The defensive struggle continued in the 2nd quarter with both offenses stalling. Later Concord would put together a sustained drive capped by Roger Smith's 27 yard touchdown reception from Sean Willix. Brandon Barnhardt would add the extra point to tie the game at 7-7. Concord's Wesley Scott recovered a Robinson fumble on the next series and the half ended in a 7-7 tie.
The defenses would control the 2nd half as well. After a Concord punt Jason Hampton would strike again for the Bulldogs, this time covering 71 yards to put Robinson up 14-7. Concord answered with a drive of their own capped by Evan Carpenter's 45 yard TD catch. Barnhardt's extra point was wide right. Concord's defense started the 4th quarter with a big stop as Robinson went for a 4th and short conversion. The duo of Wesley Scott and Jalen Brown teamed up to stop the Robinson runner short of the first down. Down by one Concord methodically drove down the field. But a tipped pass was intercepted by Bulldog cornerback Zach Fandl.
With less than two minutes left and Robinson holding the ball all appeared lost but Concord's defense would come through again. On the first play after the turnover the Spiders forced a fumble recovered by Concord linebacker Bradley Phillips. Concord would run a few plays before a field goal attempt. The Bulldogs used their remaining timeouts to ice kicker Brandon Barnhardt but to no avail. Barnhardt's 22 yard field goal split the uprights to give Concord the lead with 2 seconds remaining. The kickoff return was stopped after a short gain.
Darin Posey led the Concord defense with 12 tackles, 2 sacks and an interception. Sean Willix finished 12-27 for 165 yards with 2 touchdowns and one interception. Roger Smith added 58 yards rushing and a touchdown reception.
Next week the Spiders open SPC play with a trip to Piedmont.

Concord defeated Northwest Cabarrus 35-7 Friday night at Trojan Stadium.
The only thing standing between Concord and a shot at a fourth straight SPC title was Northwest. However the host Trojans were not quick to concede to the favored Spiders.
Northwest controlled much of the first quarter with a punishing ground game led by tailback George Miller-Duncan.
Robinson beat Concord 20-0 in the season opener for both teams.
Daevin Hobbs was a jack-of-all trades for the Bulldogs, scoring on offense, defense, and handling the punting duties for the Bulldogs. The Spiders moved into the red zone numerous times but could not break through for a touchdown.
Robinson scored the lone points of the half when Blue Monroe found Hobbs behind the Spider defense for a quick 33 yard touchdown. Monroe’s 2 point conversion pass failed.
Kadin Presutti nearly took the second half kickoff to the house. He was tripped up at the Bulldog 19 yard line. However the Bulldogs were able to clamp down on the Spider offense.
Early in the fourth Zach Jenkins was stripped on a rushing attempt and Hobbs scooped the ball and scampered 55 yards for a score. It appeared Jenkins forward progress was stopped, but after a lengthy discussion between the officials the play stood.
The Spider offense had a couple more chances but were unable to score. The Bulldogs added a late score for the final 20 point margin.
Despite the final margin there were bright spots for the Spiders. The Spider defense held the Bulldogs to 2/8 third down conversions and 0/3 on fourth downs. Tristan Pittman picked off a pass to end a Bulldog drive. The Spider offense was able to move the ball but will have to capitalize on opportunities in the red zone.
Concord leads the series with the Bulldogs 11-8.

Robinson survived a wild finish to beat the Spiders 13-12 for their first ever victory over Concord.
Bulldog freshman QB Bradley Clay opened the scoring in the first quarter with a 3 yard pass after two consecutive pass interference calls moved the ball to the 3 yard line. The extra point was missed. Concord answered in the second quarter with a Jimmy Drye 8 yard TD run. Chad Myers extra point was blocked, the first of two the Bulldogs would block.
Robinson jumped out to a 13-6 lead on the arm of Clay who completed a 65 yard TD pass halfway through the third quarter. Concord again answered when Jimmy Drye hit Lance Lewis with a short pass and then scrambled for a 41 yard touchdown. Myers extra point was blocked again.
Concord had one final chance starting at the Bulldogs 33 yard line with two minutes to play. The Bulldogs sacked Drye on second down, then Drye completed a pass to TE Matt Beecher who ran to the Robinson 15. On fourth down the Spiders lined up for a Chad Myers field goal but ran a fake instead. Holder Dustin Burris was stopped short of the first down and Robinson held on for the win.
Concord's defense dominated again holding the Bulldogs to negative rushing for the game and only yielding 140 yards passing.
Pictures coming soon.
Concord opened the season Friday night taking on former SPC foe Hickory Ridge in Harrisburg. Concord had won the 4 previous meetings but the Bulls grabbed a firm hold on Friday's contest early on.
Bulls senior quarterback Dylan Ratliff ran around left end 70 yards for a touchdown less than a minute into the contest. After a Spider punt Ratliff connected with Jarett Garner on a 27 yard touchdown pass.
Down 16-0, Spider quarterback Jadon Bell and a strong running game got the Spiders back into the contest.
Concord hosted Pine Forest Friday in the first ever meeting of the schools.
The Spiders took a 7-0 lead after Jadon Bell’s 36 yard touchdown pass to Nick Santiago.
Early in the 2nd Landon Trott added a 35 yard field goal to give the Spiders a 10-0 lead.
The Trojans got on the board midway through the 2nd quarter with a 24 yard touchdown pass from Richard McEachern to Jordan Gladney.
With seconds left in the first half Bell found Joe Bond who hauled in an 8 yard touchdown pass. The drive was kept alive by a spectacular catch by wide receiver Ikym Hall. <photo>
Bond’s catch pushed the Spiders to a 17-7 halftime.
Pine Forest freshman quarterback Jadon Jones provided a spark for the Trojans in the 2nd half.
Jones scored from 11 yards out to get the Trojans with striking distance at 17-13.
After a Spider punt Jones hit Rowdell Robinson on the slant. 63 yards later the Trojans had a 19-17 lead with just over 10 minutes remaining.
After giving up scores on two straight possessions the Spiders needed a spark. Antonio Campbell came through with a 90 yard kickoff return touchdown. The Spiders reclaimed the lead and never looked back.
On the next possession Spider linebacker Clint Bost, Jr. stepped in front of a Trojan pass and set the Spiders up at midfield.
Landon Trott hit his second field goal of the night, this time from 26 yards to give the Spiders a 9 point cushion with minutes remaining.
The Spider defense buckled down and Emmanuel Arias broke up a 4th down pass to effectively end the Trojan threat.
He didn’t find the endzone but sophomore tailback L.J. Currie had a sparkling performance. Currie rushed for 173 yards on 27 carries.
The Spider defense came through when it mattered most. Clint Bost Jr. and Jordain Heilig paced the Spiders with 7 solo stops each. The duo
Rick Sandidge had 2 sacks and Joe Coleman added one sack.

Concord went on the road for the first time in the 2006 playoffs Friday night and defeated the host Yellow Jackets 24-13.
It was a strong team effort with the defense and offense both making play after play. The Yellow Jackets had won 13 straight after losing their first game of the season.
The Spiders opened the scoring in the 1st quarter as Dee Bost found Lance Lewis on a 27 yard pass play. Chad Myers would add a 20 yard field goal to extend the Concord lead to 10-0 early in the second quarter. The Spiders would strike again as Roger Smith took a screen pass 71 yards to put the Spiders up 17-0. Carver would put together a solid drive which resulted in a touchdown on Rashaun Brown's 20 yard run. Concord would threaten again but the drive ended when Bost's pass was intercepted near the Carver goal line.
The Spiders took the second half kickoff and established quickly who would control the second half. Roger Smith capped the drive with a 2 yard touchdown run. Carver would add another score with a short touchdown pass, but their 2 point conversion attempt failed. The Concord defense would force a turnover late and the game ended with Dee Bost taking a knee near the Carver goal line.
Concord's 24 points were the most given up by Carver this season. Dee Bost finished 16-27 for 383 yards and 2 touchdowns. Five different receivers caught a pass for the Spiders. Jimmy Drye led all receivers with 98 yards on 4 catches. Roger Smith added 70 yards rushing with a touchdown run and catch. Fullback Mike Moore would add 57 yards as well.
The Spider defense stepped up and contained the potent Carver rushing attack. Calvin Hillie had a monster night with 14 tackles. Mike Moore added a fumble recovery.
With the win the Spiders advance to the 3A Championship game against Western Alamance. It is the Spider's second trip to the final in 3 seasons. The Championship game will be played at N.C. State's Carter Finley Stadium Saturday at 12PM.
